Police in Kampala are investigating the death of a 40-year-old IT staff member at Kyambogo University, who was killed in Namugongo, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District. The victim, identified as Jacob Ankasasira, was reportedly attacked and beaten by a mob in Kigambo Ghetto, Namugongo, on suspicion of theft.
Detectives from Kira Division Police are leading the investigations into the incident. Two suspects have been arrested to assist with inquiries, and intelligence teams are working to identify others involved in the mob attack.
According to preliminary findings, Ankasasira and his wife, Catherine Kansiime, stayed at a guest house in Kyebando, Kampala, on the night of November 30, 2024. The following morning, Ankasasira left the guest house to buy milk but did not return. On December 2, Kansiime was informed by Chrispus Ainembabazi that Ankasasira had been severely beaten in Namugongo near the Catholic Shrine.
Police officers who visited the scene transported Ankasasira to Angelina Medical Center, from where he was referred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for further treatment. He succumbed to his injuries on December 11, with the hospital attributing his death to severe brain injuries caused by blunt force trauma. A postmortem confirmed the cause of death.
Kansiime was initially arrested but later released on bond after family members expressed suspicion of her involvement in the attack. Investigators are also considering leads related to a family dispute over property inheritance and the victim’s history of alcohol abuse as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
