South Sudan Orders Social Media Shut Down for Three Months

South Sudan has ordered internet service providers to block access to Facebook, TikTok, and other social media platforms for up to 90 days. The directive, issued by the South Sudan National Communication Authority (NCA) on Wednesday, January 22, cites increasing concerns over violent online content linked to events in the neighboring Republic of Sudan.

According to the NCA, recent upheaval in Sudan has resulted in the circulation of graphic videos and images that depict attacks on South Sudanese refugees in WÄ“d Medan, where women and children were reportedly killed. The authority expressed concern that such content violates local laws and poses a serious risk to public safety and mental health, particularly for vulnerable groups.

The order, coming into effect at midnight on January 22, is based on Sections 9(g)(f) and 34(6) of the National Communication Act, 2012. Telecom operators MTN South Sudan and Zain South Sudan have confirmed compliance with the government directive, informing customers that direct and indirect access to Facebook and TikTok services will be suspended through their networks for the specified duration.
