JUST IN: Uganda Embassy Among Attacked by Protesters in DRC’s Kinshasa

Protesters have attacked several embassies in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital Kinshasa, including those of Uganda and Rwanda.

The attacks on January 28, 2025, happened during demonstrations against the escalating conflict in the country’s east, according to diplomatic sources.

The embassies of Rwanda, France, Belgium and the United States were all targeted, with smoke billowing above the French embassy building, an AFP journalist said.

Although details of the incident are still scanty, Uganda’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa confirmed during plenary sitting that the embassy was attacked in the early morning hours and set on fire.

“I received a call from the minister for regional co-operation informing me that the embassy had been set on fire. He requested for space on the order paper to brief the country on what is happening. I asked him whether it was possible to brief us on this matter today, he requested for tomorrow. They are right now, in a meeting over the same issue,” Tayebwa said.

This was after the Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi asked for a statement from the Government on what is happening in DRC. Ssenyonyi expressed concern over the safety of Ugandans living in DRC and those at the border.

He also expressed concern that over Uganda’s failure to have an accredited ambassador to the DRC.

Business has been paralysed in Kinshasa as protestors take to the streets after M23 rebels said they had seized Goma.
