Police in Kabale are investigating a fatal single-vehicle accident that resulted in three deaths and multiple critical injuries. The incident occurred on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at approximately 8:00 PM along the Bigaaga-Katojo access road in Mushenyi B village, Kabale District.
The involved vehicle, a gray Toyota Corolla with registration number UAQ 372M, was driven by Tumukunde Isaac, a 30-year-old resident of Kinyame village in Kahunge Sub-county. Tumukunde survived the crash but fled the scene and has not yet been located.
The deceased include Nanteza Loyce (37), Bugarukene Oliver (48), and Ninsiima Kate (43), all peasants from Kinyame village. The injured victims are Byaruhanga Aben (51), Ashakimana Moses (55), Tumukunde Ismael (12), and Akampurira Abraham (18). Byaruhanga and Ashakimana are primary school teachers, while Tumukunde Ismael is a Primary 3 pupil at Katojo Primary School.
Authorities reported that the vehicle was en route from Bigaaga to Katojo when the driver lost control, causing it to veer off the road and roll down a steep slope into a garden. Local residents responded promptly, retrieving and transporting the victims to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital. The deceased were moved to the hospital’s mortuary, while the damaged car remains at the crash site pending removal.
Corporal Mugabo Christopher attended the scene, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the accident. Police have appealed to the public for assistance in locating the driver and providing further information.
Authorities reiterated the need for heightened road safety measures, particularly on narrow access roads like the Bigaaga-Katojo route, to prevent similar tragedies.
