A tragic incident occurred on Thursday evening, January 30, 2025, when a light aircraft crashed at Kedong Ranch in Naivasha, resulting in the deaths of a couple, Marcus Dunn and Anne Dunn. The couple was en route to their farm in Loldia, Naivasha, aboard a Cessna 185 aircraft registered as 5Y-BVL, operated by Farmland Aviation. The flight had departed from Wilson Airport in Nairobi at approximately 1:19 PM, heading towards Mbaruk in Nakuru County. The crash occurred around 2:15 PM.
Rescue operations faced significant challenges due to difficult terrain and poor visibility caused by fog. It took emergency responders over six hours to access the crash site, which was located in a valley within the expansive Kedong Ranch. Upon reaching the site, authorities recovered the bodies of the deceased along with personal effects, including a firearm. The remains were subsequently transported to a private mortuary.
Preliminary investigations suggest that adverse weather conditions, particularly fog leading to poor visibility, may have contributed to the accident. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has confirmed that investigations are underway in collaboration with the Air Accident Investigation Department (AAID), emergency responders, and security personnel to determine the exact cause of the crash. In a statement, KCAA Director General Emile Arao expressed condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.
This incident follows a similar tragedy earlier in January 2025, when a light aircraft crash-landed in Malindi, Kilifi County, resulting in the deaths of three individuals. These occurrences highlight ongoing concerns regarding aviation safety, particularly involving light aircraft in Kenya.
