NUP MP Chased By Angry Voters like ‘Chicken Thief’ Over Broken Promises

Derrick Nyeko Keko, the Member of Parliament for Makindye East, found himself in a tough spot when he attempted to address market vendors in Makindye Division. What was supposed to be a dialogue quickly turned into a confrontation, as frustrated voters accused him of neglect and failing to fulfill the promises he made during his campaign. The situation escalated to the point where Nyeko had to flee for his safety.

A video of the incident has been making rounds on social media, showing voters angrily confronting the MP. Their main complaint? That Nyeko disappeared after winning the election in 2021, only to resurface now as the 2026 elections draw near.

“We are tired of you. You only remember us when elections are approaching. You should leave immediately!” some residents shouted. Others even threatened to physically harm him, highlighting the level of frustration among the electorate.

Nyeko’s political journey has been marked by controversy. He was originally affiliated with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) but later defected to the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP). His switch helped him secure the Makindye East seat, where he defeated the then-incumbent Ibrahim Kasozi of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC). However, many opposition supporters have never fully trusted him, seeing him as someone with lingering ties to the NRM.

Beyond the political distrust, residents say Nyeko has failed to deliver on key issues like road construction, healthcare improvements, and community development. Instead, they claim, he prioritized his personal life—specifically, a lavish wedding that reportedly cost over UGX 500 million. This, they argue, is evidence that he has enriched himself while they continue to struggle with poor services and economic hardship.

With elections approaching, Nyeko faces a tough road ahead. If he hopes to win back the trust of his constituents, he will need more than just words—concrete action and real change will be his only hope of survival in the political arena.
