Ugandan Man Who Claimed to Be Gay to Gain Asylum in UK Jailed for Raping Woman

A former Ugandan rugby player who falsely claimed to be gay to secure asylum in the UK has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for raping a woman in Cardiff.

Philip Pariyo, 32, who once represented Uganda at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, failed to return to his home country after the competition.

Instead, he remained in Britain, seeking asylum by stating he was a homosexual and would face persecution if deported to Uganda, where same-sex relationships are illegal.

However, his claims were later exposed as false when he was found guilty of raping a woman in June 2021. His victim described the horrifying attack, stating that she was left “fighting and begging for my life.”
