Milton Obote’s Son Opens Up on Life in Exile

Bishop Stanley Engena, son of former Ugandan President Milton Obote, has opened up about the hardships of exile and the challenges his family faced while living abroad.

Speaking in an interview with NTV on Monday, Engena described exile as a life of restrictions and survival, yet one that ultimately strengthened his faith.

“In exile, you’re stripped of the luxury of travel and many opportunities, including employment. Being stateless, you learn to survive and adapt. But I thank God for guiding me to give my life to Christ,” he stated.

Engena’s father, Milton Obote, led Uganda twice before being overthrown in 1985, forcing the family into exile.

He highlighted the emotional toll of being away from home, especially the difficulty of maintaining close family ties across borders.

“Exile brings trauma and separation, but despite the years apart, we’re working to build a bond with our children. Though distance divided us, we remain united as the family of Milton Obote,” he added.

His remarks reflect the broader struggles of many political exiles, who often endure uncertainty and loss.

Despite these hardships, Engena emphasized resilience, faith, and the ongoing effort to reconnect with loved ones.
