VIDEO: “If You’re Not Ready for Competition, Remove Elections, Don’t Beat People”- Ugandan Bishop to Govt

At the 28th Anniversary of Kasana-Luwero Diocese, Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere spoke out against rising violence ahead of elections. He questioned why the government allows such actions if it is not ready for fair competition.

“The practice of beating people who are trying to get nominated for elections is uncouth. If you don’t want them to contest, eliminate the elections,” he said.

Having served 13 years as Bishop of Kasana-Luwero, the Archbishop urged leaders and citizens to uphold respect and fairness during elections.

As Uganda moves closer to the 2026 elections, Archbishop Ssemogerere warned against hate speech and insults in politics, especially on social media.

“Let us avoid using social media to insult and abuse others,” he said.

He also condemned the excessive force used by security agencies during the Kawempe North by-election nominations, mentioning a candidate being stripped and a journalist losing an eye.

“The level of violence we witnessed is deeply troubling,” he added.

The Archbishop expressed frustration over the gap between government statements and actions on violence and torture.

“The President has been very clear from the beginning in calling for an end to violence, but why are those engaging in torture not being held accountable?” he asked.

He urged all candidates and supporters in Kawempe North to remain peaceful and follow the law.

With Muslims beginning Ramadan and Christians preparing for Lent, Archbishop Ssemogerere encouraged prayer, patience, and personal change.

“Let us fast in order to gain calm and patience, with the aim of turning away from our evil ways,” he said.

The Archbishop also spoke about proposed changes to the UPDF Act, which would give military courts power over civilians. He said those pushing for the changes “need prayers.”
