At least five people have died and 21 others were injured in a nine-car crash that occurred on Wednesday evening at Mayanja Valley along the Kampala-Bombo Road. The incident involved multiple motor vehicles, including a Toyota Noah, several Toyota Hiace vans, a Fuso Super Grande truck, a Toyota Corolla, a Toyota Sienta, and a Yamaha motorcycle.
According to preliminary police investigations, the driver of the Fuso Super Grande truck, traveling from Kampala to Bombo, lost control while descending Mayanja Valley and collided with other vehicles and the motorcycle, all moving in the same direction. The crash resulted in the immediate deaths of occupants in some of the vehicles and the motorcycle rider, while 21 passengers in the Toyota Hiace taxis sustained injuries.
The injured were transported to Mulago Hospital for medical treatment, and the bodies of the deceased were taken to Mulago City Mortuary for post-mortem examinations. The vehicles involved in the accident were towed to Kawempe Police Station for inspection as the investigation continues.
Police have urged motorists to prioritize road safety by ensuring their vehicles are well-maintained, adhering to speed limits, and driving defensively to prevent such tragic incidents. Eyewitnesses reported that some of the victims were students returning home after attending evening classes at various schools in the area.
