A police officer is in custody following the fatal shooting of 18 year old student Mudago Sogo in Kaliro District. The incident happened after a resident, Godfrey Mutebi, reported the theft of his three bulls, leading police to track down the suspect, Zigondo Bosco Pande, at a local bar.
As officers attempted to arrest the suspect, a crowd gathered and became agitated. Some threw stones at the police, trying to attack the suspect. In the chaos, Sergeant Kyakwise fired a shot that struck and killed Mudago Sogo.
The suspect was taken to Kaliro Police Station, while Sogo was rushed to the hospital but did not survive. His body was later taken to Bumanya Health Centre IV for a post mortem.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the shooting, focusing on whether the use of force was justified. Regional Police Spokesperson Michael Kasadha has urged the public to stay calm and allow the legal process to take its course.
