Social commentator Frank Gashumba has sparked debate after questioning the role of churches in wealth creation, arguing that religious institutions operate more like businesses.
Speaking on Sanyuka TV on Friday, Gashumba dismissed the notion that prayer alone leads to prosperity.
“No one has ever become rich solely through prayer. While pastors receive money from their followers, how do Elon Musk and the other most successful people acquire their wealth? It’s not through Church,” he remarked.
Gashumba further challenged the necessity of church attendance, citing the COVID-19 lockdown as an example.
“These churches are businesses. If you want blessings, you can get them from home. President Museveni locked down churches during COVID-19. Did people die because they weren’t going to church?” he questioned.
His statements come amid ongoing discussions in Uganda about the commercialization of religion, with critics accusing some pastors of exploiting followers for financial gain.
Religious leaders, however, argue that churches provide spiritual nourishment and social support.
Gashumba’s views are expected to fuel more debate, especially as Uganda grapples with issues of economic hardship and growing concerns about religious accountability.
