Equatorial Guinea is the only African country where a father and son occupy the top two positions in government. President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has ruled since 1979, making him one of the world’s longest-serving leaders. His son, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, currently serves as Vice President.
Obiang appointed his son to government early on, initially as Minister of Agriculture and Forestry. In 2012, he became Second Vice President, overseeing defense and security. By 2016, he was promoted to First Vice President, positioning him as his father’s official successor.
Many believe this move is intended to keep power within the family. Although a 2011 constitutional amendment limited the presidency to two terms, Obiang was allowed to run again, raising speculation about whether his son will eventually assume leadership.
As of December 2024, President Obiang remains in power, with his son still serving as Vice President. Observers continue to watch closely to see if TeodorĂn, as he is popularly known, will eventually take over the presidency.
