Mbarara Businessman Shot by Security Guards After Attempting to Intervene in Armed Standoff

A terrible incident has left 32-year-old businessman Brian Barigye fighting for his life in Mbarara City, Uganda. Barigye, from Katete, was shot in the stomach by armed guards from Legit Security Company Ltd. The attack happened when Barigye and others asked why two uniformed security guards were in the area. One of the guards fired a gun, hitting Barigye and leaving him badly injured.

This awful event came just one week after Barigye survived another attack by men with pangas (machetes). His family is heartbroken and worried as he struggles to recover at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital. Doctors rushed Barigye into surgery to remove the bullet, which caused serious damage to his intestines. The wound is severe, and he will likely need to stay in the hospital for a long time to heal.

Barigye’s father is devastated and believes someone planned the attack. He thinks it might be linked to threats his son received before. He is also upset about how private security companies operate. He says they hire untrained people who misuse guns and don’t face consequences for their actions. He wants the government to step in and make sure justice is served for his son.

People who saw the incident said they noticed masked men with guns near Barigye’s business. Barigye tried to help when things looked dangerous, but he was shot soon after. One witness, Henry Mugarura, said they had just finished watching a football match when they saw the armed guards. Barigye’s attempt to protect others led to his critical injury.

The police in Rwizi Region have arrested two security guards from Legit Security Company Ltd: 17-year-old Marvin Nabimanya and 22-year-old Samuel Amutuhaire. They also found a loaded gun with another person named Derrick, who is now in custody. The police have sent the case to the Resident State Attorney for further legal steps.

Barigye’s family and friends are praying for his recovery while hoping the authorities will hold those responsible accountable. The incident has raised concerns in Mbarara about the safety of private security guards carrying guns and the need for better rules to prevent such tragedies.
