On the evening of April 30, 2025, Charles Ong’ondo Were, the Member of Parliament for Kasipul, was fatally shot in Nairobi at approximately 7:30 PM near the City Mortuary roundabout on Ngong Road. The area is monitored by CCTV cameras.
According to eyewitnesses, two assailants on a motorcycle carried out the attack. One gunman dismounted and shot MP Were at close range. The assailants specifically targeted Were, while his driver escaped unharmed.
Traffic officers and other witnesses reportedly observed the incident. Despite being rushed to Nairobi Hospital, MP Were was pronounced dead.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula expressed deep sorrow, stating, “It is with profound shock and unspeakable sorrow that I received the devastating news of the fatal shooting of Hon. Ong’ondo Were along Ngong Road near City Mortuary, Nairobi.”
Reports indicate that Were had been in parliamentary sessions earlier that day. Months prior, he had claimed his life was at risk and that he was being followed.
