Rajiv Ruparelia, a 35-year-old businessman, died in a tragic car accident early on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the Busabala Flyover in Makindye-Ssabagabo, Wakiso District. He was driving a white Nissan GTR, a powerful sports car with registration number UAT 638L, when the crash happened around 1:54 AM.
Police say Rajiv was driving from Kajjansi toward Munyonyo when his Nissan GTR slammed into concrete barriers at the flyover’s roundabout. The car flipped over and caught fire, burning completely. The crash was so severe that Rajiv died instantly, and the car was left as a charred wreck. Pictures and videos shared online showed the destroyed Nissan GTR with flames and smoke, making rescue impossible.
The Nissan GTR is known for its speed and sleek design, popular among car enthusiasts. Rajiv, who loved fast cars, was a key figure in Uganda’s motorsport scene and even started his own rally team. He had been driving the car after returning from a trip to London and attending a friend’s wedding event in Munyonyo earlier that night.
People in the area said the concrete barriers, part of road construction, had no warning signs or lights, which may have caused the accident. Frank Mwesigye, who saw the crash site, called the road dangerous and poorly marked. Police are still looking into why the crash happened, but they believe Rajiv may have lost control of the car.
Rajiv was a well-known businessman, working with his family’s company, the Ruparelia Group. His death has left his family, including his wife Naiya and young daughter, heartbroken. Many in Uganda are sad about losing him, and his family is planning his funeral.
