When the liver becomes swollen due to diseases such as hepatitis, fatty liver disease, or liver cirrhosis, it can cause discomfort or pain in various parts of the body. The most direct area affected is the upper right side of the abdomen, just beneath the ribcage. This is where the liver is located, and any inflammation or enlargement can cause a dull, aching pain or a feeling of fullness in this region.
As the liver enlarges, it may also put pressure on nearby organs and tissues. This pressure can lead to referred pain in the right shoulder or upper back, caused by irritation of the phrenic nerve, which connects the liver area to those regions. Patients might experience this pain as sharp or throbbing, especially when taking deep breaths or lying on the right side.
Additionally, a swollen liver can lead to abdominal bloating or general discomfort throughout the midsection. This occurs because the liver may press against the stomach or intestines, affecting digestion and causing a feeling of tightness or heaviness. Some people also report nausea or a loss of appetite alongside this discomfort.
Finally, if the liver’s condition worsens and begins to affect blood flow or bile drainage, it may result in pain radiating to the lower back or even cause systemic symptoms like fatigue and body aches. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent further complications.
