A 35-year-old man has died by suicide at Awei Police Outpost in Alebtong District, according to local authorities.
The deceased, Ronald Odongo, was a resident of Anoki village, Owalo Parish, Awei Sub-County in Alebtong District.
On September 6, 2024, Odongo was taken to Awei Police Outpost by local leaders after allegedly ingesting poison, reportedly in response to learning of his wife’s infidelity.
Odongo was later taken to a health facility and treated. However, he continued expressing suicidal intentions, leading to his detention at the outpost, where a case of attempted suicide was filed against him.
The following day, after being escorted to relieve himself in the morning and served a meal at 2:30 PM, police officers discovered Odongo had hanged himself in his cell.
Authorities suspect that Odongo used a string from his clothing to take his own life. Officers from Alebtong Central Police Station were alerted, and a team led by the District Police Commander examined the scene.
The body was taken to Alebtong Health Center IV, where a postmortem confirmed the cause of death as suicide due to blockage of the windpipe. The string and chemical substances he had ingested earlier were collected for forensic analysis. The body was later handed over to the family for burial.
