98 killed in seven days in crashes on Ugandan roads

At least 98 people lost their lives on Ugandan roads over a seven-day period, according to the police.

Traffic police spokesperson Michael Kananura reported that between August 25 and 31, 98 fatalities occurred across the country in various crashes, with 336 people sustaining injuries.

Motorcyclists accounted for 48% of the deaths, vehicle occupants 26%, pedestrians 20%, and pedal cyclists 2%.

One of the accidents occurred in Kyenjojo, where a taxi collided head-on with a Pokopoko bus, resulting in 10 deaths on the spot and nine injuries. The accident, which took place on August 28 at 4 a.m. along the Fort Portal Highway, was attributed to the taxi driver, who was unfamiliar with the road and fatigued after driving for long hours from Ntungamo. The driver left his lane and collided with the oncoming Isuzu bus.

Police indicated that unsafe overtaking was responsible for 27% of the crashes, while speeding contributed to 22% of the accidents.

Motorists and other road users have been urged to follow best practices, especially when overtaking.
