In a move to uncover the truth behind the recent Bank of Uganda cyber heist, police have searched the homes of several individuals suspected to be involved, including high-ranking government officials and IT specialists.
The operation, which took place on February 5, 2025, targeted residences in Kampala, the capital city.
Among those affected was Mr. Lawrence Semakula, the accountant general at the Ministry of Finance, and Mr. Mark Kasuku, an IT specialist at the same ministry.
Both men are believed to have played key roles in facilitating or covering up the crime.
According to a police official who spoke on condition of anonymity, the investigation is focused on a sophisticated plan that involved both cybersecurity breaches and financial misconduct.
“We will expose the truth. This is just the beginning, and we are determined to follow every lead to ensure justice is served,” a police officer involved in the investigation said.
The searches were carried out at various locations, including Muyenga, where Mr. Kasuku resides.
Shocked residents of the area watched as police vans entered and left the suspect’s home throughout the day, gathering electronic devices and documents believed to be linked to the heist.
While authorities have not revealed the exact amount of money stolen, they have confirmed that the loss is “significant.”
The police are working with forensic experts to analyze the evidence seized during the operation.
So far, investigators have raised concerns about the involvement of high-ranking officials, which adds another layer of complexity to the case.
The Bank of Uganda has issued a statement reassuring the public that customer funds and institutional operations are safe.
“We are working closely with the authorities, and steps have been taken to ensure the security of our systems and funds,” the bank said.
Despite the shocking nature of the heist, the police are committed to ensuring transparency in their investigation.
They have vowed to act swiftly and diligently to uncover the full extent of the crime and hold those responsible accountable.
“We will not stop until we have uncovered all the details and brought those behind this heist to justice,” the police official added.
