Hon. Barnabas Tinkasiimire, a Member of Parliament from the National Resistance Movement (NRM), expressed his concerns about President Museveni’s actions. Tinkasiimire, despite being from the ruling party, said he is not afraid to point out when the president is wrong.
One key issue he addressed was the imprisonment of Dr. Kizza Besigye, which he called a mistake, stating, “Imprisoning Dr. Kizza Besigye is very wrong, 100%.”
Tinkasiimire acknowledged that President Museveni has gained the public’s goodwill over the years, but he also pointed out that the president’s mistakes are often overlooked.
He argued that Museveni’s ability to bring the Democratic Party (DP) under his control, with the DP president now serving as a minister, shows that the party no longer poses a real threat to his leadership.
Tinkasiimire also shared his views on the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), claiming that the party’s approach, led by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, does not adequately address Kampala’s political needs.
Instead, he suggested that Kainerugaba’s role is limited to bringing in military forces during elections to suppress the opposition, rather than offering solutions for the country’s challenges.
As for the upcoming Kawempe North by-election, Tinkasiimire made it clear that the NRM has fielded a candidate who will better serve the area, urging voters not to be misled by political parties and to consider the NRM candidate.
Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi, of the National Unity Platform (NUP), warned that if former NUP candidate Alex Lusswa Luwemba runs as an independent, he would face disciplinary action from the party.
Kivumbi also predicted that NRM would struggle in the by-election and will be lucky to score above 30%, with NUP aiming to show that NRM’s influence in Kampala is lacking.
Government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo defended the NRM, pointing out that the party has gained significant support in areas like West Nile, Acholi, and Teso, where it historically had limited presence.
“We never used to win at all in Acholi when we started as NRM, today we are at 70% visa vie FDC. We never used to win in Teso but today it’s is almost 100%,” he said.
