Meet Sierra Leon’s Youngest Ex President Who Went Broke And Had To Live with His Mother

Valentine Strasser, born on April 26, 1967, was the President of Sierra Leone from 1992 to 1996. He became the world’s youngest head of state when he took power after leading a coup against President Joseph Saidu Momoh in 1992.

Strasser was only 25 years old when he assumed office. His leadership marked a turning point in the country’s history, as he promised major reforms to fight corruption, improve education, and boost healthcare.

However, Strasser’s presidency was marred by controversy. Despite his early promises, he faced criticism for authoritarian rule, human rights violations, and the suppression of political opposition.

He also struggled with the challenges of leading Sierra Leone during the brutal Civil War. In a move to gain military support, he hired a South African mercenary group, Executive Outcomes, to fight against the rebels of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF).

In 1996, after four years in power, Strasser was overthrown by his own military allies, including Julius Maada Bio, who later became the president of Sierra Leone.

Strasser fled the country and lived in exile in the United Kingdom and Gambia. However, both countries denied him asylum, leaving Strasser without a home.

Strasser’s life took a downturn after his fall from power. He lived in poverty and had to depend on his mother’s support.

He spent his time drinking palm wine and often faced ridicule from those who once praised him. He briefly studied law in the UK but struggled to find success.

Years later, after falling ill in 2019, Strasser received medical treatment in Ghana and returned to Sierra Leone in 2021. President Julius Maada Bio, who had once overthrown him, offered Strasser a home as a gesture of kindness.

Strasser’s story is a tragic one, showing the rise and fall of a leader who once had great potential but ended up living in hardship.
