Police in Kampala have arrested a popular city DJ known as Selecta Shaban for allegedly defrauding a woman identified as Maria of Shs15 million, who had recently returned from working in Saudi Arabia.
According to police sources, officers traced Shaban to a rented house in Kawempe, where he had reportedly been hiding for several weeks. His arrest followed a complaint filed by Maria, who accused him of taking her savings under false promises during what she described as a romantic relationship.
Maria told police that she met Shaban online, and the two began chatting frequently on TikTok. Over time, she said, their friendship evolved into a romantic relationship, and she began sending him money to cover personal expenses and what she believed were joint investment plans.
“I loved him and believed everything he told me. I never thought he would steal from me,” Maria said emotionally after confronting him at the police station.
Shaban, however, denied being her boyfriend. He told investigators that they were only social media friends who exchanged messages and that there was no romantic relationship between them.
The case has since attracted wide attention on social media, with users debating who might be telling the truth. Some people jokingly commented that Shaban was “catfished,” while others sympathized with Maria for losing her hard-earned savings.
