Excitement in West Nile as Museveni Commissions Grand Leju Sports Stadium

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Wednesday officially commissioned the newly constructed Leju Sports Stadium in Terego District, describing it as a major achievement in the region’s growing development. The event marked the formal opening of one of West Nile’s most significant sports and community facilities, designed to promote youth talent, unity, and local economic activity.

The President, who is also the NRM Presidential flagbearer, was welcomed by thousands of residents and leaders who gathered to celebrate the completion of the modern sports complex. The commissioning ceremony was followed by a rally, where President Museveni commended the people of Terego for their continued support toward government programs.

He emphasized that the government had already fulfilled its role in establishing peace and building infrastructure, adding that it was now the responsibility of citizens to use these foundations for wealth creation and improved livelihoods. The President reminded the gathering that the NRM government had brought lasting peace to Uganda for the first time in centuries, which has made it possible for such development projects to flourish. He also said that the current stability had enabled the growth of an inclusive political system and a strong economy, urging residents to embrace programs like Operation Wealth Creation and the Parish Development Model.

Museveni highlighted that the establishment of the Leju Sports Stadium was not only an investment in sports but also a driver for social cohesion and economic growth. He noted that such facilities would give young people productive engagement, reduce unemployment, and attract investment in the region. The President further assured the residents that the government would continue implementing key infrastructural projects to support community development and regional transformation.

Earlier, State Minister for Internal Affairs and Terego District NRM Chairperson, Hon. Obiga Kania, expressed gratitude to the President for prioritizing sports infrastructure and other government-funded initiatives in the area. He said Terego was among the fastest-growing districts in terms of infrastructure and praised the government’s decision to channel funds directly to citizens through various economic empowerment programs.

Kania, however, appealed for additional government support in addressing pressing local challenges and requested that more attention be given to pending projects within the West Nile sub-region.

NRM flagbearer for Terego East, Babanga Wilfred Erima, also thanked the President for fulfilling his promises to the people, saying his track record proved that he was a leader who delivers on commitments. He urged residents to continue supporting the NRM, describing the commissioning of the Leju Stadium as clear evidence of government’s ongoing investment in Terego’s future. Erima also proposed the establishment of a skilling center to equip young people with practical skills and reduce the migration of youth to other regions in search of work.

Meanwhile, Eric Sabiti Dramviko, the NRM flagbearer for Terego West, applauded the President for granting district status to Terego, which he said had strengthened local governance and service delivery. He, however, called for more administrative units to ease service access once the moratorium on new local governments is lifted.

The commissioning of Leju Sports Stadium marks a new chapter in Terego’s development story, transforming the district into a potential hub for sports and community events. The project stands as part of President Museveni’s broader effort to extend modern infrastructure across the country, blending physical development with economic empowerment initiatives aimed at improving lives and sustaining peace in every region.
