General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), on Monday carried out a detailed inspection of the L-39 Skyfox demonstrator at the UPDF Air Base in Entebbe, underscoring the military’s ongoing push to modernize Uganda’s airpower.
The aircraft was showcased by a visiting delegation from Aero Vodochody, the Czech company that manufactures the L-39 series. The team was led by Vladan Resner and included senior officials David Jahoda and Vladimir Tovarek, who briefed the CDF on the Skyfox’s performance, upgraded avionics systems, and its dual-use role as both a training aircraft and a light-combat platform.
The Commander of the Air Force, Lt. Gen. Charles Okidi, joined other senior Air Force leaders in the inspection, participating in technical discussions on how the aircraft could fit into Uganda’s training and operational needs.
Gen. Muhoozi emphasized that strengthening the Air Force with modern technology remains a central part of the UPDF’s long-term strategy.
“Our goal is to maintain a capable, modern, and professional air arm that can respond to today’s demands while preparing for tomorrow’s challenges. Reviewing platforms like the L-39 Skyfox is essential to ensuring our forces receive efficient and reliable capabilities,” he said.
The CDF’s broader modernization program includes enhanced training for personnel, procurement of next-generation systems, and reforms aimed at improving efficiency and welfare across the force.
The L-39 Skyfox, if eventually acquired, is expected to bolster Uganda’s pilot-training programs and support light-combat missions, marking another step forward in the UPDF Air Force’s efforts to expand and upgrade its capabilities.
