A joint operation led by Crime Intelligence and the Flying Squad has successfully arrested seven suspected members of a notorious robbery gang terrorizing the Kampala Metropolitan area.
The gang, known for using four motorcycles with registration numbers UGG 950L, UDN 457C, UEW 888A, and UGC 825D, is alleged to have conducted numerous heists targeting betting centers and slot machine shops. Police investigations revealed that the group, comprised of eight members, operated with four riders and four passengers. They were reportedly armed with machetes and imitation guns.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango identified the suspects, including 27-year-old Joseph Nsabamungu, believed to be the gang leader who often posed as a security informant. Other suspects include Stephen Kayita, 28; Shafik Baligeya, 22; Nicole Musimami, 30; Adrian Kakato, 21; Asuman Riyinza, 27; and Lawrence Kibuuka, 37, an army deserter with service number R222701.
The gang reportedly committed three robberies in Bulenga, Namasuba, and Mukono over three consecutive nights, amassing a total of 5.7 million Ugandan shillings. During questioning, the suspects disclosed that Lawrence Kibuuka, the army deserter, received the largest cut from each robbery, ranging between 150,000 and 200,000 shillings. Nsabamungu, identified as the gang’s commander, kept all military items, including uniforms and replica guns.
Onyango noted that efforts are ongoing to capture the remaining accomplices and enhance public safety across Kampala Metropolitan. The police have raised public concerns regarding the rising arrests of UPDF deserters and impersonators in possession of military gear, leaving questions about the source of these items.
