A bright student of Makerere University has died in a tragic road accident on the Kampala-Gulu Highway, one of 46 confirmed fatalities in the crash. The student, identified as Zamida Majid, was enrolled in the 2021/2022 Bachelor of Arts in Economics programme at Makerere. Authorities have arrested a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer and a health worker for allegedly stealing large quantities of government medicines, including more than 150,000 doses of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs. The operation, carried out by the National Drug Authority (NDA), targeted individuals suspected of diverting medical supplies from public health facilities for illegal sale on the black market. The M23 rebel group in the Democratic Republic of Congo has warned that it may march toward the capital, Kinshasa, if the government continues what the group calls “provocations” and “sabotage” of ongoing peace efforts. The Ugandan film industry is mourning the sudden death of Nicole Maimuna Tumusiime, an actress popularly known for her role in the JDC TV Series aired on Pearl Magic Prime. The Uganda Police Force has announced the recruitment of 100,000 Election Special Police Constables to support security operations during the 2026 general elections. According to a statement signed by AIGP Jesse Kamunanwire on behalf of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the constables will serve on a three-month contract, earning UGX 469,000 per month. Fifteen officials from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) have been charged with corruption and causing financial loss of more than Shs9.3 billion in connection with a scam involving fraudulent gorilla and chimpanzee tracking permits. According to the charge sheet, investigators say the officials manipulated UWA’s online Go Chimp reservation system to issue thousands of fake permits between July 2020 and September 2023. The fake permits reportedly granted unauthorized access to several protected areas, leading to losses estimated at over USD 2.5 million. At least 63 people are confirmed dead and many more injured after two buses collided early Wednesday on the Kampala–Gulu highway in Kiryandongo District. The crash happened at Asili Farm in Kitaleba village, where the two buses, a lorry and a Toyota Land Cruiser were involved. According to police, a bus from Planet Company travelling from Adjumani to Kampala swerved into the wrong lane and collided head-on with a bus from Nile Star Company travelling from Kampala to Arua.
