Police in Kanungu District are investigating a suspected murder after the body of an unidentified woman was discovered tied with ropes, stuffed in a sack, and dumped in the Ntungwa River. The discovery was made around 3pm on August 2, 2024, by young boys fishing in the river. They alerted the local chairperson, who sent his defense secretary, David Kasigeire, to report the incident to the police.
Kanungu Territorial Police officers visited the scene, examined and documented the area, and retrieved the body from the water. It was taken to Kanungu Health Centre IV mortuary for a postmortem examination. According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Elly Maate, the body was still fresh at the time of recovery, suggesting the killing likely occurred that morning, with the body disposed of shortly after. The act appears deliberate and calculated, with the victim’s body tied and concealed in a sack to avoid detection.
Efforts are underway to identify the victim and the perpetrators. Police are urging anyone with information or missing a loved one to visit Kanungu Health Centre IV mortuary to assist with identification and arrange for a dignified burial. They have also appealed to the public for leads to help trace those responsible, emphasizing the need for closer cooperation between the community and law enforcement to address such crimes.
The incident has shaken residents, raising concerns about personal safety and the increasing trend of bodies being discarded in isolated rural areas.
