Butaleja-based 16-year-old student delivers quadruplets

Celebrations have erupted in Butaleja district as a 16-year-old Senior Two student naturally gave birth to quadruplets.

Mwajuma Nankya, 16, delivered the babies on Sunday, September 1, 2024, at Busolwe Hospital. She was later transferred to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for further care.

Nankya, full of joy, recounted her experience, sharing that when labor began, she first visited a nearby clinic, which promptly referred her to Busolwe Hospital. She was seen helping the medical staff in the children’s ward, smiling as she tended to her newborns.

During her antenatal visits, Nankya had been informed she was carrying twins, so she was surprised when she gave birth to quadruplets. She expressed gratitude, acknowledging her challenges in carrying and delivering four babies naturally.

Nankya, who was in Senior Two when she became pregnant, expressed her desire to return to school. However, she highlighted the financial difficulties her family faces and the vulnerability of her husband, who dropped out of Primary Seven.

Dr. Abeso, the head of the children’s ward at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, confirmed that all four babies are healthy and stable. However, there are concerns about whether Nankya will have enough breast milk to feed all the babies if she returns home. The doctor also advised that Nankya should avoid becoming pregnant again soon, as her body needs time to recover.
