Child Killed As Man Attacks Father-in-law’s Home in Kabarole

The Rwenzori west police Spokesperson, Mr Vincent Twesige

Police in Kabarole District are investigating the murder of a child that occurred on October 29, 2024, in Kakworo Village, Hakibale Sub-County. The suspect, a 28-year-old man identified as Nazalio Kakana, is accused of attacking the home of his 49-year-old father-in-law, Samuel Muhiigi.

During the incident, Kakana allegedly targeted and attacked 12-year-old Susan Mary Kabjwika and her 7-year-old brother, Peter Ampaire, as they slept. Susan succumbed to her injuries shortly after being taken to Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, while Ampaire remained in critical condition.

The motive behind the attack is believed to stem from a prolonged family dispute linked to Kakana’s strained relationships with his two wives, who are biological sisters. Following disagreements, both wives had left him, and he had recently sought a younger wife. Reports indicate that Kakana had issued threats toward his in-laws due to the breakdown of his marriages, leaving the children vulnerable.

At the time of the attack, Muhiigi and the children were sleeping in the same room. Officers from Hakibale Police Post, assisted by a team from Kabarole District Police headquarters, responded to the scene, but the suspect remains at large.

Evidence collected from the scene includes bloodstained walls and beddings, pointing to a violent encounter. The victim had multiple cuts, compound fractures, and severe head trauma. Forensic investigations are underway, although the weapon, suspected to be a machete, has yet to be recovered.
