The DP Bloc, a faction aligned with the Democratic Party (DP), has officially endorsed Nyendo Mukungwe Legislator and former Leader of the Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga, as their presidential candidate for the 2026 elections.
The announcement was made on Thursday at the DP Bloc’s Kampala offices, where prominent members Michael Mabikke and Lubega Mukaaku expressed their confidence in Mpuuga, describing him as the strongest opposition candidate. They argued that Mpuuga stands the best chance of defeating President Yoweri Museveni in the next election.
The DP Bloc, which previously supported Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, in the 2021 presidential race, accused the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader of isolating himself. They claimed that Bobi Wine no longer values advice from those outside his immediate circle.
However, Buikwe MP Lulume Bayiga, a member of the Democratic Party, clarified that the DP Bloc’s endorsement of Mpuuga does not reflect the position of the DP. He emphasized that the DP and the DP Bloc are separate entities and that the Democratic Party is still entangled in internal leadership conflicts, leaving them yet to decide on a presidential candidate for the 2026 elections.
