A 37-year-old man, who allegedly impersonated a doctor in the health ministry’s permanent secretary’s office, has been remanded to Luzira Prison for scamming sh37m from two individuals with false promises of securing them jobs.
Robert Baluku, was today (October 24, 2024), charged with two counts of obtaining money by false pretences, contrary to section 305 of the Penal Code Act, at Nakawa Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kampala.
The offence attracts a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment, upon conviction.
The accused appeared before Nakawa Court grade one magistrate, Frank Namanya, and denied the charges.
State Attorney, Viola Tusingwire, informed the court that investigations into the matter are complete and requested court to set a hearing date. This prompted the court to adjourn the case to November 12, 2024.
According to the charge sheet, the accused is a resident of Mutungo Binna in Nakawa Division, Kampala City.
Allegations
The prosecution alleges that the accused, between March 2021 and June 2022 in Kampala City, intentionally defrauded Doreen Amullen of sh18.5m by falsely claiming to be a doctor employed in the office of the permanent secretary at the health ministry, promising to secure employment for her brother, Joseph Emmanuel Achulokin.
Baluku is also accused of defrauding Simon Ojore of sh17.8m between September 2021 and June 2022 in Kampala city. He claimed to be a doctor employed at the health ministry, attached to the World Health Organisation, to secure employment for Ojore with the Malaria project.
