Fred Mutesasira, 40, was found dead in a family well hours after visiting his mother’s home in Bruhane Zone, Kinoni Town Council, Lwengo District. Having recently married, Mutesasira had traveled from his home in Lusaarira, Ssembabule, to see his mother, only to discover she was not home. He decided to wait in the compound for her return.
At around 8 p.m., family members called him for dinner, but there was no response. When they went outside to search, they found his body floating in the well within the compound.
Mutesasira, a devoted husband and father of six children from a previous marriage, is believed to have taken his own life. His death is thought to be linked to an ongoing land dispute, with reports suggesting that wealthy individuals were attempting to seize his property.
Local defense leader Sulait Masembe noted that Mutesasira had expressed feelings of hopelessness over the dispute, and residents recalled his struggles with intimidation and threats.
Mutesasira’s mother, devastated by the loss, had spoken with him earlier that day, unaware of the distress he was experiencing.
Kinoni Town Council Mayor Joseph Lubega Bazonoona condemned those exploiting vulnerable residents and urged individuals facing property disputes to seek legal assistance. Lwengo District Khadhi, Sheikh Ismail Kibuule, also expressed concern about the presence of unprotected wells, emphasizing the need for action to prevent future tragedies.
Kinoni police, led by Officer in Charge Moses Mayanja, encountered difficulties in retrieving Mutesasira’s body from the well. After significant effort, the body was recovered and taken to the mortuary for further examination.
