First Ugandan Made Smartphone Launched

Simi Mobile, founded in 2019 by President Yoweri Museveni, represents Uganda’s entry into local technology manufacturing.

On November 30, Minister of State for Investment and Privatisation, Evelyn Anite, launched the first Ugandan-made smartphones at U-Home in Arena Mall, Kampala.

The launch featured discounted Ugandan-made electronic products, offering shoppers a chance to support local innovation.

Supported by the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) and the National Information Technology Authority of Uganda (NITA-U), Simi Mobile is part of a broader government strategy to boost local manufacturing and innovation.

Operating from the Kampala Industrial and Business Park in Namanve, the company produces mobile phones, laptops, and other ICT products. A subsidiary of Chinese firm Engo Holding, Simi Mobile has made Uganda the first East African country to assemble mobile phones locally.
