Gen Muhoozi Appoints NUP’s Lwanga to Head Greater Mukono

Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), has appointed Jimmy Lwanga, a member of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and MP for Njeru Municipality, as the coordinator for Greater Mukono. The appointment was officially announced by PLU General Secretary Daudi Kabanda.

Lwanga, who was elected to parliament in 2021 on the NUP ticket, also serves on the Public Service and Local Government Committee. His shift to PLU is seen as a big blow to the opposition NUP, which has lost several members, including Bukoto South MP Twaha Kagabo, to PLU. Kagabo recently left NUP for PLU, which is rumored to be positioning Gen Muhoozi for a future presidential run.

In addition to Lwanga’s appointment, Muhoozi named Adrian Ddungu as Lwanga’s assistant, Augustine Bankunda as publicity secretary, Abdullah Kasozi as committee secretary, and Daisy Sarah Sonko to head the Women Council. Other committee members include Malik Kiberu for the Youth Council, Tadeo Kintu representing persons with disabilities, and David Tuseregete as Secretary for the Elderly Council.

Lwanga, who won his parliamentary seat with 13,676 votes, has been at odds with NUP since 2023. His fallout with the party began after he attended a PLU-organized event, the Soroti Baraza, where he was seen engaging with Gen Muhoozi. Lwanga later confirmed his allegiance to the MK movement, led by Muhoozi.
