Rt. Fr. Callistus Rubaramira, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kabale, has indefinitely suspended Rev. Fr. Ignatius Arinaitwe, a curate at the Queen of Apostles Rwamagaya Catholic Parish in Rukungiri, over allegations of financial misconduct.
The suspension was communicated in a letter dated November 12, 2024, addressed to all bishops, archbishops, and the papal apostolic nuncio to Uganda, Archbishop Luigi Bianco. The letter indicates that Fr. Arinaitwe is prohibited from performing priestly duties within the Diocese of Kabale and beyond.
Fr. Arinaitwe has been relieved of his powers of order and governance effective immediately. The Bishop urged Christians to pray for the priest as he reflects on his priestly responsibilities and the consequences of his actions.
Rev. Fr. Dr. Monsignor Sunday Viaany, the Kabale Diocese Vicar General, confirmed the suspension but did not disclose additional details.
According to canon law, a cleric can only be suspended if found guilty of a crime.
