Kigezi’s Kakama Writes UCE Exams With His Feet

A 20-year-old student at Kigezi High School, John Kakama on Monday began his Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams under the new competency-based curriculum using his feet to write in Kabale District.

Despite being born without arms, Kakama born from Ntungamo is one of the 108 students sitting for their UCE examinations at Kigezi High School in Kabale Municipality. When our reporter visited, Kakama was well-prepared for his first Mathematics exam, with all the necessary materials in place.

Kakama attributes his academic journey to God’s grace, describing it as a remarkable experience to have reached this stage. He expressed confidence in his performance, crediting the training and preparation he has received.

Orphaned at a young age, Kakama is currently under the care of a Child Development Centre in his home district. He dreams of becoming a lawyer and one day rising to the position of Chief Justice, trusting in God’s guidance to help him achieve this goal.

Abraham Akampurira, the head teacher of Kigezi High School, praised Kakama, describing him as a unique student whose success is inevitable.

Monday 14th October, 2024 marked the start of exams for the first cohort of Senior Four students under the new lower secondary curriculum, introduced in 2021. According to the Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB), 379,629 students are registered for the exams, which will conclude on November 15.
