Makerere University Student Dies in Tragic Kiryandongo Road Accident

A bright student of Makerere University has died in a tragic road accident on the Kampala-Gulu Highway, one of 46 confirmed fatalities in the crash.

The student, identified as Zamida Majid, was enrolled in the 2021/2022 Bachelor of Arts in Economics programme at Makerere. In a statement posted on X, the Dean of Students, Dr Winifred Kabumbuli, confirmed her death and extended condolences to her family and friends, describing the loss as profoundly felt across the university community.

The accident took place shortly after midnight on Wednesday at Kitaleeba Village near Asili Farm in Kiryandongo District. Two passenger buses and two other vehicles were involved in the head-on collision caused by simultaneous overtaking manoeuvres, according to the Uganda Police Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety.

Friends remember Zamida as disciplined, kind-hearted and deeply committed to her studies. “She was focused and kind – someone you’d count on both in class and in life,” one classmate said. Makerere University has pledged to provide counselling services to students and support to the student’s family in this difficult time.

As the nation grieves a devastating road-safety tragedy, the story of Zamida serves as a personal reminder of hopes cut short. Behind the numbers is a young scholar whose full potential will now remain unrealised.

May her soul rest in peace.
