A man imprisoned for three decades after being found guilty is over the moon after being declared free.
Thomas Mutune was arrested in 2012 at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) with drugs worth KSh 5 million( around Ush 141,944,00)
He was sentenced to prison for narcotics trafficking, but the experience behind bars shaped him into a better man.
Mutune shared his inspiring story after walking out of Thika Prisons as a free man and a qualified lawyer.
“I went to Industrial Area remand, and from there, I went through a trial, which eventually convicted me and sentenced me to 30 years imprisonment. I went to Kamiti Maximum Prison,” he shared.
While serving time, a UK-based NGO sponsored his legal studies through an online program that trained him as a paralegal and sign language interpreter.
He appealed his case to the High Court, which was successful and saw his time reduced to a decade. “In Kamiti, I found good people and a family. I learnt new things. Kenya Prison Services (KPS) treated me as one of them, moulded me, and gave me a chance to read,” he shared.
