Man Kills Mother and Brother During Spiritual Healing Ritual

Residents of Kasozi Village in Makulubita Subcounty, Luweero District are mourning the deaths of two family members who were allegedly killed by another family member while seeking spiritual healing in Kyankwanzi District on Monday.

A 30-year-old man, Ronald Ssemanda, is accused of fatally striking his mother and brother with a stick while they were at Kiyuni Village in Kyankwanzi for healing prayers. His brother, 24-year-old Robert Ssenyonga, died instantly, while their mother, Sylivia Namaganda, succumbed to her injuries at a nearby clinic.

The family had traveled from Luweero District to seek spiritual intervention at the home of Rev. David Ssejemba, a parish priest associated with Nakandura Church of Uganda in Kyankwanzi. The family, particularly the two sons, was reportedly dealing with mental health challenges, prompting their visit for spiritual healing.

The three had been staying in Kiyuni Village since July 2024, hoping for recovery through prayers. However, the tragic incident shocked many, including local leaders who were expecting their return home.

Ssemanda has been arrested by police and is currently in custody at Kyankwanzi Central Police Station. Authorities plan to subject him to a medical evaluation to assess his mental health as investigations continue.

Uganda’s 2023 police crime report indicates that, on average, 25 people are either murdered or die in accidents daily across the country.
