Police in Bombo town council have initiated a manhunt for a suspect who allegedly punched a chef to death after being denied a second serving of rice at a funeral.
The victim, Ibrahim Mubiru, 40, was a resident of Nkokonjeru Zone in Bombo, Luwero district. According to Sam Twineamazima, Savannah Regional police spokesperson, Mubiru had been hired to prepare and serve rice at a funeral in Namaliga Zone, Bombo, on Saturday.
The incident unfolded when a young man, identified only as Wilber, requested a second serving of rice from Mubiru. When Mubiru refused, insisting that others be served first, Wilber allegedly became enraged and punched the chef in the head. Twineamazima explained that Mubiru reported the assault to Bombo Police before returning to his duties at the funeral.
“Mubiru’s condition deteriorated, and he was rushed to Globo hospital by a colleague for treatment, where he unfortunately passed away,” Twineamazima said.
After his death, residents transported Mubiru’s body to his father’s home in Nkokonjeru, but the police later retrieved it and took it to Luwero Hospital for a postmortem examination.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Mubiru’s family members and local residents attempted to exact revenge by attacking Wilber’s family and attempting to destroy their home. The incident reportedly reignited underlying tribal tensions between the Baganda and Nubian communities in the area.
