Police in Greater Masaka have arrested a 34-year-old woman accused of torturing a 10-month-old boy left in her care, following an incident that has sparked public outrage after disturbing footage circulated on social media.
The child, identified as David Yolam Ssemakula, was left in the care of Stella Namawanjje by his mother, Oliver Mbabazi, a 28-year-old resident of Binyonyi A Cell, Nyendo-Mukungwe Division. Reports indicate that Mbabazi left her son with Namawanjje while she was away for two days.
Allegedly, Namawanjje abused the child by feeding him feces and urine, recording the incident on her mobile phone. The footage was later obtained by one of Namawanjje’s acquaintances, who shared it online, drawing widespread public attention.
Police were informed of the incident by AIP Auma Eunice, a Child and Family Protection Unit officer stationed in Nyendo. This led to an immediate investigation, resulting in Namawanjje’s arrest and the seizure of the phone used to record the incident.
A case file has been opened, and authorities have expressed their commitment to thoroughly investigate the allegations and seek justice for the young victim. The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues, with police encouraging the public to report any incidents of child abuse.
