Mathias Mpuuga Turns Down 2026 Presidential Bid

Commissioner of Parliament and former Leader of Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga, has rejected calls from the Democratic Party (DP) bloc to run for the presidency in the upcoming general elections. The DP bloc, led by Micheal Mabikke and political activist Samuel Lubega Mukaaku, had urged Mpuuga to consider entering the presidential race with their backing.

Mpuuga emphasized that Uganda’s current political landscape requires reforms in electoral laws to ensure a fair and balanced election. He noted that while he appreciates the confidence shown in him, there are many other capable Ugandans who can provide leadership. His focus, he stated, is on creating a political environment that allows leaders to emerge and compete fairly, rather than on individual ambitions.

Mpuuga made these remarks during a press briefing at Parliament, where he outlined his proposals for constitutional and electoral reforms.
