Mbarara Lecturer Allegedly Burns Housemaid with Hot Water

Police in Mbarara City are ramping up their investigation into an incident involving Doreen Atwongyeire, a lecturer at Bishop Stuart University, accused of pouring boiling water on her 16-year-old maid, Anita Kansiime, following an argument over the maid’s failure to bathe the children on time.

The incident occurred on September 25, 2024, and was reported the next day, leading to a formal investigation.

Atwongyeire, who had initially been released on police bond to cover Kansiime’s medical expenses, was rearrested as the case progressed. Her husband also remains in custody as police work to gather more information about the situation.

Authorities are awaiting further direction from the state attorney on how to proceed.

Atwongyeire claims the incident was accidental and happened outside their home, but police continue to collect statements from witnesses.

Meanwhile, Kansiime is recovering steadily. The case has stirred discussions about the rights and protection of domestic workers in Uganda, underscoring the need for stronger legal safeguards.
