Minister Evelyn Anite's unprecedented silence amidst scandal shocks the nation

The Minister of State for Investment Evelyn Anite

KAMPALA – Evelyn Anite, the State Minister of Finance for Investments and Privatization, has gone into silent mode after being caught red-handed impersonating the British High Commissioner to Uganda. Ever since the story surfaced that she fabricated lies about meeting with the British High Commissioner and the United Kingdom Export Finance (UKEF), the funder of the Namave Industrial Park Development Project, who directed her to force the UIA staff to refund the money that had been paid to them for work done, journalists across the board have tried to reach out to her to confirm or refute the allegations against her, but she has constantly refused to respond.

They have called her on her known telephone numbers and sent her WhatsApp messages asking her to simply answer “YES” if she met the Ambassador and “NO” if she didn’t, but she has refused to respond. On July 27, 2024, Robert Mukiza, the Director General of the Uganda Investments Authority, responded to the letter Hon. Evelyn Anite had written to him on July 3. In Mukiza’s response, which has since gone viral, he accuses Hon. Minister Anite of fabricating lies that she had met with the British High Commissioner to Uganda, who directed her to force the UIA staff to refund the money that had been genuinely approved and earned.

Mukiza accuses the minister of hiding behind the Ambassador’s good name because she wanted to hoodwink the board of directors into believing that the decision to sack him from office didn’t come from her but rather from the funders. “Hon. Minister, if you fabricated and concocted that story of meeting the British High Commissioner and sold it to the UIA board and its management to achieve your personal agenda, what else haven’t you cooked up and sold to the government, investors, and the public? Why should the government and the general public trust what you said before and what you will say in the future?” the letter reads.

He further states in the letter that, “If it turns out that indeed you lied about meeting the British High Commissioner and UKEF, you ought to admit that you deliberately manipulated facts to achieve your interests, which is a gross violation of the Oath you swore to protect and defend at all times. In any case, you have always been quoted swearing that if you ever fall out of God’s glory and the evidence is there, you would resign and take yourself to Luzira. On the other hand, if you produce empirical evidence to challenge my analysis, I stand to be penalized.”

The letter further states. One of the ministers, who preferred to remain anonymous, when asked for a comment about the matter, said, “What is surprising is that Hon. Evelyn Anite is always quick to react to anything said about her on social media platforms. She is extremely bold and doesn’t fear to confront anyone about anything at any given moment, but to find that Mukiza dared her to admit if she lied or not and keeps silent, clearly shows that she is completely guilty and simply has no answers to defend her guiltiness. She never expected the situation to boomerang in her face to this extent.”

Another source stated that she had mastered the art of manipulating the public through social media, where she falsely drags the victim she has targeted to social media’s public court, which has no room for details and explanations. Once the public has completely discredited the targeted individual on social media, she now runs to cabinet, which is already influenced by social media, to complete the job. That’s how Mr. Bemanya Twebaze, the former Registrar General of URSB, was defamed.
