The Anti-Corruption court has granted bail to Elgon County MP, Ignatius Wamakuyu Mudimi.
The legislator who faces charges of diverting public resources and conspiring to defraud the government, was granted bail by justice Jane Okuo Kajuga following his application submitted earlier on Monday this week.
Wamakuyu was released on a cash bail of Shs 35 million and was ordered to surrender his passport, restricting him from international travel without court approval.
Additionally, he was ordered to submit the title of his home in Nsambya as part of the bail conditions. His sureties, including his siblings and fellow MP Seth Wambede, were mandated to execute a non-cash bond of Shs 50 million.
Meanwhile, Mudimi’s co-accused were remanded back to Luzira prison until Friday, August 30, when the court is expected to rule on their bail applications. The co-accused include former permanent secretary of the ministry of Trade and Cooperatives, Geraldine Ssali Busuulwa, Igara East MP Michael Mawanda, Elgon County MP, and Busiki County MP Paul Akamba.
The group, which also includes Leonard Kavundira, principal cooperative officer in the ministry of Trade, and city lawyer Julius Kirya Taitankoko, faces charges of conspiring to defraud Shs 3.4 billion earmarked for compensating Buyaka Growers Cooperatives Society Limited in Bulambuli district.
The alleged crimes occurred between 2019 and 2023. Mudimi is now the third MP recently released on bail over corruption charges, joining Lwengo District Woman MP Cissy Namujju Dionizia and Yusuf Mutembuli, who was released a few weeks ago in a separate case involving the alleged solicitation of a 20 per cent bribe to influence parliamentary approval of the Uganda Human Rights Commission’s budget.
