President Museveni has made new claims against the National Unity Platform (NUP), accusing the opposition party of manipulating the 2021 general elections by adding one million votes.
During a Thanksgiving service for the late General Aronda Nyakairima, Museveni stated he has solid evidence to support this allegation and urged NUP to respond if they disagree with his claims.
Gen Aronda, who was the internal affairs minister and former Chief of Defence Forces, died suddenly on September 12, 2015, while returning from a foreign trip.
The President suggested that the vote rigging occurred through polling agents who failed to adequately monitor the election process. He acknowledged that election fraud is a persistent issue in Uganda, with some politicians using dishonest methods to secure power.
Museveni emphasized that electronic voting systems are the solution to eradicating electoral fraud. He proposed that elections at polling stations where voting machines malfunction should be delayed until the problem is resolved.
He also touched on Uganda’s history of election challenges, citing issues dating back to the 1960s involving the Uganda People’s Congress. Museveni believes biometric verification, using fingerprints, is crucial for free and fair elections, as it would prevent voter impersonation and safeguard the electoral process.
