The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has announced that over three million national identification cards have been produced and sent to districts across the country as part of its ongoing mass registration and ID renewal exercise.
NIRA’s Public Relations Officer, Claire Ollama, said the printed cards are now ready for collection at designated distribution centres nationwide.
She reminded citizens that the mass registration exercise will end in just 24 days. Currently taking place at parish level across Uganda, the exercise allows citizens to register for new IDs or update their personal information.
Ollama urged those who have not yet registered or updated their details to do so before the deadline. She noted that after the exercise concludes, registration services will only be available at district offices.
Once registration ends, NIRA will begin a nationwide mass collection exercise to ensure all registered citizens receive their printed IDs promptly.
So far, NIRA has enrolled 27.8 million Ugandans in the national database. The ongoing drive seeks to close remaining gaps and improve the accuracy of the national register ahead of the 2026 general elections.
