One person has died, and 20 others have been hospitalized at Lira Regional Referral Hospital after allegedly consuming poisoned chicken.
The victim, 32-year-old Kenneth Omara, was a resident of Temago Cell, Western Ward B, Akalo Town Council in Kole District.
The incident reportedly began on September 7, 2024, when Nixon Okwir borrowed a duck from Alfred Tunya for breeding purposes. After returning the duck, it died, prompting Tunya’s family to slaughter it for meat.
Authorities stated that the intestines of the duck were discarded at a rubbish pit, where 27 chickens consumed them and later died. These dead chickens were subsequently distributed, cooked, and eaten by several community members, who later developed severe stomach issues, vomiting blood, and experiencing diarrhea.
Instead of seeking immediate medical attention, the victims initially consulted a herbalist, who gave them a concoction to induce vomiting. Unfortunately, Omara did not survive, while the other 20 individuals were taken to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
A case of suspected poisoning has been registered at Akalo Police Outpost, and investigations are ongoing. Police have arrested several suspects, including Okwir, Nelson Ocen, and two herbalists, Milly Ayo and Milly Apio.
Officials urge the public to avoid consuming potentially poisonous food and to dispose of it properly instead.
