A 14-year-old Primary Seven pupil at Butenga Church of Uganda Primary School in Bukomansimbi District gave birth to a baby girl just one day before her final Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).
The young girl went into labor on Monday evening around 7 p.m., shortly after attending a briefing session for her exams, which are scheduled to begin on Wednesday and conclude on Thursday.
Medical staff at Butenga Health Centre IV confirmed that the delivery was normal and that both mother and baby are in good health, ensuring she can sit for her exams as planned.
Despite becoming a mother at a young age, the pupil remains determined to continue her studies and aspires to become a nurse.
The school became aware of her pregnancy only a week before the birth, according to Headteacher Peter Nkambwe, who explained that discussions with the girl’s family revealed that the child’s father is a relative living in the same household. Given the circumstances, the school allowed her to sit for her exams without any disciplinary action, prioritizing her education. Although there were some concerns from the church about her sitting for exams, the school advocated for her right to continue her education.
Meanwhile, local authorities, led by Bukomansimbi Deputy RDC Fred Kalema Pax, have launched an investigation to arrest the alleged perpetrator, who is reportedly the father of the child. Security measures have been implemented to ensure the student can complete her exams without further complications.
